Hey there my ever neglected blog!

"What's up?" you say? Hmm. Not much dearie, not much. Just that for the past two months I've been reading like a book-starved maniac.Goodreads has become my new-old best friend. Though wish I could say quality over quantity, sadly that's not really the case.

I've realized I come running to the msn (and yes I know, I could be the only one left in the planet to still use that old thing) in search of my friend Merve everytime I finish something that I think is spectacular, so that I can bash it into her head and not leave her alone till she reads it too.

And I said to myself, "Why Melis, you must be going soft in your old age. Why only bother one measly poor tortured friend, when you can write about it and torture more at the same time?"

So that's the genius behind this post. I'm gonna share my monthly favorites. Starting with January. Be warned though, this isn't a what's new this month kinda post, it's a what I have enjoyed this month kinda post. So whatever I've just read/watched/ate/wore/see/went etc this past month could have been a hype for centuries, and it may be nothing new whatsoever for you. In that case, allow me to quote some very famous words: "Frankly, my dear, I don't give a damn."

Alrightie then. January, since this month isn't yet over. Let me start with books, since that's what I was yakking about in the beginning of this post.

Easy by Tammara Webber

Man oh man, what to say about this one. I can say it saved me from ever hating the romance genre. I was on a streak of crap books when I started reading this, so I didn't get my hopes up about it. Saying it exceeded my expectations is an understatement. Lucas, dear Lucas, may be one of the best book boyfriends there is. Read and fall in love, is all I'm saying. 

Good For You by Tammara Webber

This is actually the 3rd book of Between the Lines series, but I wasn't really a fan of the first two books, so this is the one I recommend. I can't (and don't want to) go into detail explaining what the book is about, unless I'm really really crazy over something, hence the links to Goodreads. Which does synopsising (is that a word?) books far better than I ever could.

The Warlord Wants Forever by Kresley Cole

Alright, Immortals After Dark series, and its similars, where hunky gorgeous supernatural men fall in love and have lots of steamy sex, while continuing to be bad-asses, are my guilty pleasure. But I'm not ashamed to admit whatever book I'm reading and enjoying, so here it is. If that's something you enjoy, this series is hotness (though I've read only 3 books so far).

No doubt, I will be recommending such books in the future, I still look for quality in what I read, and though I do read crap most of the time too (don't these two statements contradict each other?) you would never see me recommend those utter craps that I make myself suffer through (Fifty Shades, anyone? I puked a little in my mouth just saying that).

So put your trust in the lil ol' me. And here I will shamelessly advertise myself, if you wanna be my buddy-buddy in Goodreads, don't hesitate to do so. Here is a link to my profile.

Silver Linings Playbook

I know I knooow, this has been a hype for months with Globe and Academy nominations and all, so it's hardly anything new. But it was really really good. And that's saying something coming from me because where I completely adore Jennifer Lawrence, I despise Bradley Cooper with passion. And I didn't even care about that in this movie. So for whatever reason if you still haven't seen this (you live under a rock maybe?), just do it! And if you already have, well watch it again.

Actually that's all I can remember from January. It feels like ages ago. Here's to hoping my memory will be better for the February update.

8'inci sınıftan beri kağıt üzerinde, lisede internetle tanışmamdan beri de sanal dünyada sürekli kendimden bir şeyler bırakıp durmuşum. Ama aslında büyük bir yalancıyım, eski bloglarımı ve bir zamanların livejournal'ını bulup okusanız aslında benden olan pek de bir şey bulamazsınız. Boş konuşurum ve kendimle olduğum, kendime yazdığım zamanlar haricinde pek de samimi değilimdir.

Ama bu sefer kendimden bir şey bırakmak istedim. Büyük olasılık tek okuyan yine ben de olacak olsam. Orada, dünyaya açık bir alanda, bir ara cidden yazdığım bir şey olsun. Yine kendimden bir alıntı yani..

...Biletini yapıştırmış da olsam Karanlıktakiler'i görmedim aslında. Çünkü Nisan'ın 11'inde, pazar günü babanem öldü. Trajikomik di mi? Senelerdir dedeme "git artık" diyen kadın, ondan önce gitti... Hem de grip olduğu için hastaneye yatırıldığında. Grip.

Bu konudan bahsederken çok soğuk geliyorum insanlara. Yazarken de öyleyim. Farkındayım. Ama ikiyüzlü olmayı hiçbir zaman sevmedim. Ne haberi ilk duyduğumda, ne cenazede, ne Birsen Teyze histerik histerik ağlayıp nasıl gözlerinin önünde öldüğünü anlattığında... bir kere bile ağlamadım. Ta ki bu olaydan aylar sonrasına kadar. Bir gün işe gitmek için evden çıkarken kapının kenarına bırakılan babanemin eşyalarından babanemin kokusu burnuma çarpana kadar. Koku duyusu en güçlü duyu gerçekten de...

Dürüst olalım. Babanem iyi bi insan değildi. Dırdırcıydı, huysuz ihtiyarın sözlük anlamıydı, insanların değerini kazandıkları parayla ölçerdi, dedikoducuydu, kindardı, zamanında bir iyilik yapmışsa her fırsatta hatırlatmaktan çekinmezdi, sürekli beni başkalarıyla kıyaslardı... ama babanemdi. 

Arka oturma odasına girdiğimde beni gördüğü anda sevinirdi. En fazla 5 dk sonra tartışmaya başlamamızın bir önemi yoktu. Babanemdi, ailemdi ve belki de hiç söylememiş de olsam onu gerçekten sevdim. Çok kızdım ama sevdim de. Oturup Mahnur Ünsal nasıl bir insandı diye düşündüğümde aklıma hemen iyi özellikler gelmiyo olabilir. Ama o askeri kamplarda onlarla kaldığımız yazlarda, gecenin ortasında yatağa bağdaş kurup "ben acıktım" dediğimde o saatte bana "piknik" hazırlayan insandı. Ama artık bayramlarda Levent'teki evlerinde ziyaret edip elini öpmemek için direndiğim babanem yok, artık Zincirlikuyu'da mezarı başında dua ettiğim bir babanem var. Dua etmek de denmez aslında, dua etmem çünkü. Konuştuğum diyelim. 

Bir insan bunları yazmaz da neyi yazar bilmiyorum. Niye yazmadığımı da bilmiyorum. Bildiğim şey yazmanın bana iyi geldiği. Hadi nerden bildiğimi sor!

Bunları yazarken ağlamamdan biliyorum. Olayın tazeliğinde ve aylar sonrasında bile, yaşarken ağlayamazken yazarken ağlayabildiğimden biliyorum..."

Bu aralar gecelerim pek bir uykusuz, sağlık sorunlarım var ama canınızı sıkmıyayım şimdi. Geçen yine uyuyamıyorken gecenin bir yarısında (ya da sabahın köründe) yazdığım bir şeyi okudum şimdi de, eğlendirdim kendimi, buraya da yazıyorum..

Aynı hissi vermeyecek tabii ama aşağıdaki yazının gittikçe iyice yazmayan bir tükenmez kalemle yazıldığını hayal edin:

"Başarılı insanların hikayelerini dinleriz ya hep. Harika bi kitap fikri trende giderken aklına gelir, bi peçeteye karalarsın sonra yazmaya başlarsın ve dünyanın ilk milyarder yazarı olursun. Para kısmına o kadar takık diilim aslında. Bir şey yaratmış olmak başlı başına bi başarı bi yerde... Ama düşünüyorum da benim tamamen alakasız bi anda aklıma süper bi fikir gelse bile ya yazıcak bi şey olmaz ya da yazarken kalem falan bitiverir. Bu salak kalemin yaptığı gibi...

Yıllarca şu garip biyolojik saatimle, metabolizmamla, sabah huysuzluğumla (hatta genel huysuzluğumla), gün içinde anca yarı uyanık kalabilen halimle yaşayıp da kendimi tembel, uykucu, halsiz, OFFFF, kategorilerine sokarak kendime haksızlık etmişim. Bugün öğrendim ki benim bir adım varmış: LUNAR

Ay insanı yani.. Bunu duyunca aklıma hemen kurtadamların gelmesinin suçunu popüler kültüre atıp, asıl demek istediğime geliyorum.

Kampüs dergisinin konuyla ilgili yazısından alıntılar yaparak açıklıyayım ne demek istediğimi:

Lunar insanlar, genellikle sınavı sabahın köründe olmasına rağmen, gece geç saatlere kadar ders çalışabilen, gündüz ise çalışmak için gece olmasını bekleyen insanlardır. Bunun yanına kocaman bir "tik" atma isteğime engel olmaya çalışıyorum, artık sınavlara girmiyor da olsam. Şimdiye kadar hiçbir sınava, derse, sunuma hava aydınlıkken çalıştığımı hatırlamıyorum.. Gerçi doğru söylemek gerekirse son gece sabaha kadar çalışma lunarlıktan mı yoksa "yumurta kapıya dayanmadan kıçını kaldırmama" sendromundan mı geliyor, o tartışılır..

Birçoğu bu gerçeği reddetse de, lunar insanlar entelektüel olma eğilimine sahiptirler. Geceleri düşünen ve okumayı seven lunarların bu özelliği, onların okul hayatında çok başarılı olduğu anlamına gelmez. Bir lunar, ona öğretilenleri değil, merakla kendi öğrendikleri üzerine entelektüel bir birikim kazanır. Benim "boş bilgi deposu" şeklinde adlandırdığım beynime bir de bu açıdan bakmak gerekiyor bu durumda.

Kesinlikle “sabah dokuz-akşam altı” mesai saatleri olan ofis başı işler size göre değil. Çalışma hayatına parmağımın ucunu soktuğumdan beri söyleyip durduğum şey olarak da bilinir. Tembellikle, sıkıntıyla, ofis kıyafeti giyme zorunluluğunun sinirimi bozmasıyla alakası yok yani, tamamen yapım böyle :)

Kahvaltı atlanmaması gereken önemli bir öğün. Ancak, sabah erken saatte kahvaltı yapmak zorunda olmadığınızı bir şekilde ailenize ve arkadaşlarınıza belirtmeniz gerekiyor. Bunu da "kahvaltı için buluşalım" şeklinde planlar yapma eğiliminde olan arkadaşlarıma gönderiyorum.

Birçok yazar, müzisyen, düşünür ve bilimum yaratıcı meslekleri olan insanların gece çalışıkları da bir gerçek. Tabi onlar başarılı olarak kendilerini kanıtladıkları için annelerinin "sen daha yatmadın mı, bu ne biçim düzensizlik, bütün gün uyuyacak mısın..." şeklinde başlarını yediklerini sanmıyorum.

Eh bu durumda bir kitap yazıp Lunar'lığımı haklı çıkarmanın zamanı geldi heralde. Bir de şu tüm doğama aykırı sabah 9 akşam 6 işinden istifa etmenin...

Today I want to share a fun fact I've learned from my friend Merve while wandering the streets of Türkbükü the other day (see how I snuck that in there?)

Why are flamingos pink?
Because they eat too much shrimp!
There's a reason behind the pink color involving enzymes and pygments and whatever, if you're that interested in flamingos you can research the rest, that's it from me.

Bugün, geçenlerde Türkbükü sokaklarını arşınlarken Merve'den öğrendiğim bir şeyi paylaşmak istedim (Bodrum'da olduğumu araya nasıl da sıkıştırdım ama ;)).

Flamingolar neden pembe renktir?
Çok fazla karides yedikleri için!
Aslında pembe rengin sağlanmasının enzimlerle ve pigmentlerle ilgili vs vs bir sebebi var ama flamingolarla o kadar ilgilliyseniz o kadarını kendiniz de araştırabilirsiniz. Benden bu kadar.

a few discoveries

I feel another Harry Potter book marathon on the way. Last night and today I've spent countless hours (and I'm not ashamed to admit it obviously) on JK Rowling's official site, clicking on various things, trying to find the hidden stuff. Here's how I did so far:

On the "links" page (when you click on the glasses on the homepage) there's a book with a "?" in the cover. Slide it to the left and voila there's a key! Use it on the box on the right and you will unlock a page about the Sorting Hat. Also if you wait on this page long enough, the photo frame on the left will fall down and you'll see Harry's scar on the paper behind it. As shown in the capture, obviously.

My second discovery was on my favorite page, the study of Rowling (the one you go by clicking on the eraser). Arrange the time on the hourglass as shown in the capture (13/06/07 for ones who are too lazy to click on a damn pic!) and click on the hourglass. The door is locked, right? Wrong! You'll notice that annoying fly that goes around the room doesn't move anywhere, hmm suspicious! Click on it and there appears a key! Open the door, arrange the bits on the paper so that it'll make the Deathly Hallows Symbol and click on it. Now you can take your W.O.M.B.A.T test! Though I haven't done that yet, it says it'll take 35 minutes, geez!

Eek, while writing this entry this happened on the page I just told you about.Hellooo Peeves!

Another one, though this is a bit incomplete. Go to the "Extra Stuff" page (the hairbrush) and pick up the eraser on the board and hover it over the partially torn page, you will see a few items appear on the page. I have found 3 of them around the site. The leaves are behind the partially torn page, the bottle is on the links page on the book shelf and the spider keeps crawling around on the homepage, I caught it on the newspaper. Haven't found the feather so I don't know what this does, but still cool!

And while I was writing this the phone on the homepage rang, I answered and someone said "Hello, hello, is anyone there?" then hung up.

And I've just completed the incomplete one I just wrote and found another one! Alright, the feather is on the "Fan Sites" page (the paper clip) on the shelf. Upon clicking on all four objects you get the first typed manuscript of the Philosopher's Stone! (though I can't see it yet, something's up with my pop-up blocker damn!)

This is just to prove that I did actually get it heh heh.

Staying on the "Fan Sites" page you will see empty spaces in front of the trophies, with a "?" marked plates next to them, place the "?" plates (there are two, next to each other) on the empty spaces and you will get a drawing of the midnight duel of Draco and Harry (and Dean too, though I still can't see this blah!)

And the last one! This isn't a new discovery though, I've done this years ago but still. Go to Rowling's study again (the eraser). And arrange the hourglass so it shows 20/12/04 and click on the hourglass.This is the page you get. The door appears to be locked again. But notice on the mirror that it's open and a Xmas tree is inside. So instead of clicking on the door, click on the image of it on the mirror. This will close the image of the door while unlocking the door. Cool!

So this is how your page looks now. Click on the presents and they will ask you 3 riddles and 3 questions about Harry Potter (they are kinda tough ones too!) This is actually how the name of the 6th book was first announced. So the answers of the riddles are "Half", "Blood" and "Prince". The answers of character questions are: Don't read this if you wanna solve it yourself, don't say I didn't warn you!!

Upon answering all questions, the star on top of the tree will light up and now you can click on the card with the star symbol on it to read a Merry Xmas and A Happy New Year wish from Rowling herself.

Well that's it! That's how many I've found without checking it up on the net. I'm sure this has been done before but I had fun so whatevs!

A couple of minutes ago I was writing a bitchy review of Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows Part 2, about how emotionless it was and how they've missed some essential parts etc etc. I'm disappointed, like I always am after the Harry Potter movies. Birkaç dakika öncesine kadar Harry Potter'ın ne kadar duygusuz ve eksik bir film olduğu vs hakkında uzuuun bir eleştiri yazısı yazıyordum.
